A chilean small shrub with very finely dissected scented leaves and small bunches of white daisies in spring. Surprisingly drought tolerant and looking good even in the middle of summer.

Bahiopsis  laciniata 4€/20seeds

Native of San Diego county in California, the San Diego sunflower is a spreading shrub with yellow daisies in spring. Useful in a mixed shrub border and very drought tolerant. Sow in autumn, germinates easily.

Baileya multiradiata 3.50€/20seeds 

The desert marigold, forms big mounds of grey leaves and is topped with yellow daisies in either spring or summer whenever water is available. Very drought tolerant.

Ballota acetabulosa 5€/20seeds  

A classic Mediterranean plant with grey leaves and upright stems covered in small white flowers but the attractiveness of it comes from the big lime green calyces than in time turn brown. Easy filler in a summerdry garden. Loved by Greeks worldwide for its traditional use as a wick. You just place a dry calyx upside down on oil and light it (just remember to take out the seed out first).

Similar to B.hispanica but with more rounded leaves and taller stems of whorled inflorescences and fresh lime green calyces, a great background for other bolder flowers like bearded Irises.

Similar to B.acetabulosa but smaller in all parts, this makes more lower plants, more heavily covered with leaves. Loved by garden designers of drought tolerant gardens for its mounding effect.

Bauhinia yunnanensis 5€/10seeds  

From China, as its name indicates, but this species loves Mediterranean conditions and will quickly cover a wire fence and produce its beautiful small pink flowers in the summer. Requires some water in the summer to keep it looking fresh. Scarify or warm water treatment and germination will follow fast.

A western USA shrub with very spiny but verry attractive looking apple greeen/silver leaves and a heavy flowering of yellow blossoms in spring. Very drought tolerant and lots of patience required for it to reach maturity but is well worth the effort.

From the Yunnan province of China, this is a big barberry with attractive shiny long leaves, red new growth, orange yellow flowers in late spring followed by red berries in autumn that slowly turn purple black. A generally tough plant, not requiring lots of water once established and perfect for a semi shady spot in the garden. Can attain a height of up to 4 meters at maturity and its habit is naturally arching.  Seeds germinate best with cold stratification.

A western USA native, the chocolate lily has bright yellow black centered flowers all summer through autumn, needing only the occasional (once a month will suffice) watering to survive and bloom. It takes some time to establish but gets better every year.

If you like woody lilies, you're going to love this one. From a big, Agave celsii like rosette rises a  2m branched inflorescense  of pendant pomegranate pink flowers. It takes some years to flower from seed but it's worth the wait! Sow in autumn or spring but keep the seedlings relatively warm.

All of us in the Mediterranean know this plant and enjoy its abundant purple flowers (can't say the same about the foliage scent) but don't really grow it in our gardens or pull it it out when  it  naturally appears. Well, it does have its place  in very tough conditions in my opinion or in a semiwild garden allowed to do its own thing.

Unlike many of your known Buddleias this is a small shrub perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate and summer drought as it originates in the Karoo desert in South Africa. Silvery white foliage - even more so during its summer dormancy - and fluffy yellow flowerheads in spring, this is a slow grower but over time makes a magnifiscent sight. Sow in spring.

A small shrubby species from Spain, this forms small rounded shrubs with thin greyish green leaves and airy inflorescences of lime yellow flowers at the end of summer and autumn.  Grows slowly and doesn't mind summer drought.

Bupleurum gibraltaricum  4€/20seeds

As its name suggest, this Gibraltar native species, has quite a peculiar growth form. Big stems are clothed with long and wide grey leaves. In summer, very tall, more than 1m high, flowering stems rise above the leaves and end up in big , Ferula like umbels of intense yellow that glow in the intense summer heat. Flowering is in mid to late summer but the inflorescences hold their colour for another couple of months. Slow to establish but very valuable for its summer flowering.  Very drought tolerant, but if it has a couple of waterings per monnth it will hold its foliage better. Germinates fast from fresh seed.
